Design, build and finance the improvements on existing freeway and tunnel lighting systems in the Detroit Metro Region and to operate and maintain the existing and improved lighting system for a period of 15 years.
The project is the first P3 in the U.S. for a freeway lighting asset and the first transportation P3 in the State of Michigan. Located in the Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, the freeway lighting system consists of approximately 15,000 fixtures and the underlying infrastructure. The majority of the system’s fixtures are now high-pressure sodium or metal halide fixtures. Over a period of 2 years, from August 2015 to August 2017, the system will be upgraded and the outdated lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LEDs.
The improved system will help increase highway safety conditions to the traveling public and lower the energy consumption through implementation of energy efficient lighting fixtures.
